In North America (at least in Canada and the States), February 2 is known as “Groundhog Day”:  The day a furry rodent is pulled out of hibernation to see whether or not there will be another six weeks of winter.  The premise being, if he sees his shadow, winter will last another six weeks.  If he doesn’t, winter ends early.  In fact, this doesn’t always hold true.

Unlike some of the “Groundhog Day” Celebrations, Imbolc is not loud.
It doesn’t arrive with fireworks or declarations.

It arrives the way truth often does:
Quietly, insistently, and impossible to unfeel.

This is the time of first sparks — the moment when winter loosens its grip just enough for life to whisper, “Soon.”  This is the time of year (even in the winter-gripped lands in South-eastern Ontario in Canada), where it feels like the earth is anticipating freedom from its iron chains of ice and snow.  There is no “real” evidence of it, but you can feel it!

Imbolc is about:

  • purification without punishment

  • beginnings without pressure

  • hope without performance

Light a candle.
Clean one small thing.
Speak one gentle intention aloud.

You are not meant to overhaul your life at Imbolc.
You are meant to acknowledge that something within you is ready to grow.

And that, dear one, is enough.

Imbolc Candle or Diffuser Blend

“First Spark”

  • 2 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

  • 1 drop Rose (absolute) (Rosa x damascena)

  • 1 drop Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)

  • 1 drop Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

(Yes, Rose is strong. One drop is plenty. This is sacred, not perfumery.)

Use during:

  • candle lighting

  • intention setting

  • quiet planning (not launching, planning)

Why it works:
Frankincense = sacred threshold
Rose = heart-truth
Sweet Orange = hope
Rosemary = clarity and courage
